Do I Really Need a Cover Letter?

I must admit that this question often leaves me with a blinking stare (reminiscent of Amy Poehler invoking Katie Couric during an SNL skit). Let’s forget for a moment that many employers won’t consider a resume without a cover letter. Why wouldn’t you take advantage of this self-marketing freebie?

A well-written cover letter gives you:

  • An open opportunity to explain why you are absolutely perfect for the position and for the company.
  • A chance to match your skills and experience with the skills and qualifications that they’ve requested.
  • An edge over less prepared candidates using canned, “print and repeat” cover letters or none at all.
